Raise Your Writing That Extra Notch
Raise Your Writing That Extra Notch No matter what we write, we want our readers to take value away from the experience of reading our words. That value can come from a well-defined argument, a descriptive narration that inspires, a clearer understanding of a process, or a precise sense of a comparison or contrast. Sometimes, however, your writing can miss the sharpness of expression that you sought when you started the project. The text seems disjointed or not clear enough. Youre disappointed. You know you could have said more, but you dont know just how to do it. You dont understand why the finished product doesnt live up to your expectations of it. The key to finding greater writer satisfaction is to raise your writing a notch, so your words will better express the idea you have chosen. How do you raise your writing that extra notch? What techniques can you use to make your writing better and more communicative? There are three techniques that work well:Including appropriate illustrations and examplesExpanding your d iscussion/argumentNarrowing your subject/topic focusLets look at the last of these techniques first. At first glance, you wouldnt think that narrowing a topic would help you to raise your writing to a higher level, but it does. Focus is important to good writing, and focus starts at the beginning when you organize the work. It is particularly important to base your writing focus on its planned length. You need to be very aware of how many words/pages you have available to make your point. Are you writing a short essay, a long research paper, or a book? By narrowing the scope of your subject to fit the general length that is available, you will avoid the common problem of being too broad or wordy, or going off on a tangent without realizing it.Once you know you have 1,000 words, for example, to present your thesis, youll realize that you probably should limit yourself to 2-4 arguments to defend it. On the other hand, if you know you have 5,000 words to write a short story, you will d evelop the plot accordingly to determine how many characters you can introduce and the number of scenes you can use to tell the story.Focusing on your essay or your story before you start to write allows you to choose the best details early and then make sure theyre included the way you want them and in the right order. Youll raise your writing a notch because youll be using precision.Another valuable technique that can raise your writing a notch is to use related illustrations and examples. Both will add depth and breadth to your arguments and strength to your thesis statement. This technique adds practical details that can explain your argument points in all their aspects and illustrate your theory. Examples of such down-to-earth tools are quotations, case studies, literature summaries, statistics, visuals, graphics, interviews, observations, etc. Finally, learn how to expand your discussion/argument by carrying both to a higher level. Many times, a writer offers a wonderful argume nt or makes an excellent point related to his or her subject or thesis. Then the writer simply stops with that brilliant statement and does not expand it in any way. Ask yourself, What comes next? What does the statement mean? How does it relate to my thesis or the conclusion Im working toward? Its important to clarify or define a good point, so it doesnt get lost. The reader needs to see the development of an idea, so as to understand the relationship of that one idea to the whole paper. Its also important to present opposition or alternatives and discuss why either or both are useful or not so useful to an understanding of the thesis and its final rendition. For instance, when you present a quote, dont just present it and move on. Discuss the meaning of the quote. Put it in context, and relate it to other quotes and other parts of your discussion. In that way, the level of your writing is raised an additional intellectual notch and becomes more meaningful. Such expansion of thought presents alternative viewpoints and details that are valuable to drawing the final conclusions of either an argument or the entire paper. Using this technique raises the entire scope of the writing to another level. The reader will take away a more complete understanding of the entire document and your point of view as its author.Whether you are writing an essay or a research paper, composing a poem or a letter, documenting technical material, or developing a proposal, it is important to try to raise the level of your writing using the techniques presented here. Doing so will communicate the ideas that inspired you and raise your writing that important extra notch. You will be able to communicate your ideas in greater depth and with increased passion; both you as the writer and your reader as the listener will benefit enormously.

Contemporary Academic Deliberations Of Love s Alchemy By...
Contemporary academic deliberations of ââ¬Å"Loveââ¬â¢s Alchemyâ⬠by John Donne and ââ¬Å"On My First Sonâ⬠by Ben Jonson has given rise to one controversial issue: whether love should be labeled as uncertainty. In fact, some argue that the poem ââ¬Å"Loveââ¬â¢s Alchemyâ⬠expresses the cynical love, whereas, the poem ââ¬Å"On My First Sonâ⬠focuses more on pious love. These contrasting views have also been articulately conveyed through words, such as, ââ¬Å"Alchemyâ⬠and ââ¬Å"Farewellâ⬠in the individual poetic works of both Donne and Jonson, respectively, with one conclusion: to alter men by first enticing them to a fantasy world, wherein they are rendered unstable, and later, compelling them to correct themselves. Furthermore, though both of these aforementioned poems are aboutâ⬠¦show more contentâ⬠¦In fact, Donne is in a constant quest to find a deeper meaning of love, though he is only met with disappointments at the end. To elab orate on this point, though Donne concedes that he had once found love when he mentions, ââ¬Å"I have loved, and got, and toldâ⬠(line 3), he (Donne) still carries the disjointed feelings that he got from this love. Furthermore, Donne utters, ââ¬Å"Tis not the bodies marry, but the minds,â⬠(line 19). Here Donneââ¬â¢s profound connection and obsession with death, and that he is constantly aware of it. The words, ââ¬Ëshadowââ¬â¢, ââ¬Ëangelicââ¬â¢ ââ¬Ëshort scornââ¬â¢ are related to the underworld that one may not easily embrace; thus, causing displeasure. Many who might object to the notion that a woman plays a special role in a manââ¬â¢s life and she has the ability to make her man happy, Donne attacks this very notion as well: ââ¬Å"Our ease, our thrift, our honor, and our day, Shall we for this vain bubbleââ¬â¢s shadow pay?â⬠(line13-14). By these verses, Donne implies that though men have to work harder to serve their women, in return, however, men do not receive the same amount of true love that they deserve; their love remains unrequited. The Adventures of Huckleberry Finn Not for the Adolescent Free Essays
Mr. Jordan AP English III 13 January 2013 Huckleberry Finn For decades, Mark Twainââ¬â¢s ââ¬Å"The Adventures of Huckleberry Finnâ⬠has spurred many controversies because of its offensive language, bad grammar, and racial bias. Some schools have even banned it from being taught; despite the benefits that one receives from it. We will write a custom essay sample on The Adventures of Huckleberry Finn: Not for the Adolescent or any similar topic only for you Order Now When read to the right audience, one could learn from the harsh dialect, the use of satire, and the historical setting. However, because of the more advanced components of this book, ââ¬Å"The Adventures of Huck Finnâ⬠should only be taught to high-school seniors in advanced English classes. One of the most popular reasons as to why ââ¬Å"The Adventures of Huck Finnâ⬠is banned in some schools is because of the use of offensive language such as the ââ¬Å"nâ⬠word and other racist comments and actions, mostly when referring to Jim, the runaway slave. In an article written by Allen Webb, he states, ââ¬Å"â⬠¦it was clear that hearing the word come out of my mouth made my African Americanâ⬠¦students bristle. Because of the bookââ¬â¢s constant use of the term and other instances of racism such as when Huck takes advantage of Jimââ¬â¢s gullibility and lack of education, tricking him with a snake skin, and later tries to convince him that a series of dramatic events were a dream, which both confuses and upsets Jim, makes teaching the book very difficult, no matter how sensiti ve one will attempt to be. For this reason, ââ¬Å"The Adventures of Huckleberry Finnâ⬠should not be taught anywhere except in advanced senior English classes. As an advanced student, the level of maturity tends to be higher and the curriculum consists of a more broad and difficult selection, preparing the students for any style or type of writing. When hearing the use of a term such as the ââ¬Å"nâ⬠word, most of these students will see it as a term to portray the time period and evoke strong emotions from the audience instead of taking it to offense. While the controversies that the offensive language stirs up are understandable, ââ¬Å"The Adventures of Huck Finnâ⬠should be taught for the opportunity to discuss topics such as racism and to learn from Twainââ¬â¢s unique writing style. Without the opportunity to read ââ¬Å"The Adventures of Huckleberry Finn,â⬠students would lose the chance to experience Twainââ¬â¢s use of satirical humor and a historical setting and dialect. In an interview with Nancy Methelis, she says that ââ¬Å"The Adventures of Huck Finnâ⬠ââ¬Å"â⬠¦is a part of American history as American literature, so they can see it its place within the spectrum of literature and history. â⬠The book lends a realistic depiction of life during the times of slavery and helps to more understand the feelings and struggles of African Americans. Also throughout the book is a heavy use of satire. For example, Miss Watson attempts to become and better Christian, yet she owns slaves and considers them her property. Another instance is when Pap becomes outraged at the thought of a black man being able to vote even though the black man is more educated that him. Twain uses the tool of irony and satire to poke fun at the idea of white supremacy and uses his writing style to portray the flaws in society. By reading ââ¬Å"The Adventures of Huck Finn,â⬠one can build their reading skill by deciphering Twainââ¬â¢s style and can also experience an accurate description of pre-Civil War life. In conclusion, ââ¬Å"The Adventures of Huckleberry Finnâ⬠should be taught in advanced senior classes only to ensure the students are mature enough to handle the complex aspects of the book such as the harsh language and literary tools. Although some might believe that the book is offensive and better off banned, I believe that the benefits one will receive from reading ââ¬Å"The Adventures of Huckleberry Finn,â⬠such as realistic depictions of history and fine examples of American literature, are much too valuable. Among of its customers are Worldwide Express, United Parcel Services (UPS), Nationwide Express, Citylink, Bax Global, Nippon Express, Cargo Malaysia Services and Bangor Berhad.FCB had appointed Kenchana Associates as its external auditor. The Protagonist Mr Chuah Mun Soong is the main character in this case. He is an auditor for FCB. He needs to present the financial report of Flat Cargo Berhad to the audit committee of FCB in two weeks. However, there are several inconsistencies reported by his subordinates in the accounts of FCB. We will write a custom essay sample on Report of Fcb Case or any similar topic specifically for you Do Not WasteYour Time HIRE WRITER Only 13.90 / page Mr Chuah had dilemma either to continue servicing this client company or not.Kenchana Associates reputation might be affected if FCS is really proven to be involved in fraud. The major issue in the case is the inconsistencies in the accounts of FCB. FCB had incorrectly recorded the loan from Hong Kong company to be in its debtorsââ¬â¢ account. This posed some questions to auditorsââ¬â¢ side whether it is intentionally or not to record it in debtorââ¬â¢s account. The auditors manage to identify several suspicious transaction and recording involving non-current asset and current asset. For example, the auditors found that there is no valid purchase document of aircraft by FCB in 2005 as claimed in the FCBââ¬â¢s financial statement. Further investigation was also found that there is non-functional rundown aircraft in a hanger which might lead to overstated of non-current asset in 2005. Besides that the auditors manage to notify certain debtorsââ¬â¢ and sales revenuesââ¬â¢ account that found to unverified. In addition, it was also found that loan received from Hong Kong based company was incorrectly recorded in the debtorsââ¬â¢ account which lead to overstating the current asset. Inflated . All evidences above were among the issues that posed serious problems. Another issue that should have to be concerned in this case is the issue of its corporategovernance and internal control. It is really something suspicious when it comes to the appointment of FCBââ¬â¢s Board of Directors. Even though it had been specified that the composition of the Board of Directors was in adherence to the Malaysian Code of Corporate Governance, something seems to be not right when it comes to the person called Ali bin Ahmad, one of FCBââ¬â¢s Board of Directors. In FCBââ¬â¢s Company, Ali bin Ahmad was not only one of the Directors, but he was also one of theAudit Committee and one of the top management for FCB. At this point, the possibility of unethical conduct could be arisen from the top management, Ali bin Ahmad since he was seemingly had an access and more authority as one of FCBââ¬â¢s Audit Committee. Brief description of case exhibits In Income Statement, the revenue of FCB is steadily increasing from year 2001 until 2005. However, according to auditors, no supporting documents available for several sales transactions in 2005.

Base Definition in Chemistry
Base Definition in Chemistry In chemistry, a base is a chemical species that donates electrons, accepts protons, or releases hydroxide (OHs of bases include alkali metal hydroxides, alkaline earth metal hydroxides, and soap. Key Takeaways: Base Definition A base is a substance that reacts with an acid in an acid-base reaction. The mechanism through which a base works has been argued throughout history. Generally, a base either accepts a proton, releases a hydroxide anion when dissolved in water, or donates an electron.Examples of bases include hydroxides and soap. Word Origin The word base came into use in 1717 by French chemist Louis Là ©mery. Là ©mery used the word as a synonym for Paracelsus alchemical concept of a matrix in alchemy. Paracelsus proposed natural salts grew as a result of a universal acid mixing with a matrix. While Là ©mery may have used the word base first, its modern usage is generally attributed to French chemist Guillaumes of Rouelles bases included alkalis, metals, oils, or absorbent earth. In the 18th century, salts were solid crystals, while acids were liquids. So, it made sense to early chemists that the material that neutralized the acid somehow destroyed its spirit and allowed it to take solid form. Properties of a Base A base displays several characteristic properties: Aqueous base solution or molten bases dissociate into ions and conduct electricity.Strong bases and concentrated bases are caustic. They react vigorously with acids and organic matter.Bases react in predictable ways with pH indicators. A base turns litmus paper blue, methyl orange yellow, and phenolphthalein pink. Bromothymol blue remains blue in the presence of a base.A basic solution has a pH greater than 7.Bases have a bitter flavor. (Dont taste them!) Types of Bases Bases may be categorized according to their degree of dissociation in water and reactivity. A strong base completely dissociates into its ions in water or is a compound that can remove a proton (H) from a very weak acid. Examples of strong bases include sodium hydroxide (NaOH) and potassium hydroxide (KOH).A weak base incompletely dissociates in water. Its aqueous solution includes both the weak base and its conjugate acid.A superbase is even better at deprotonation than a strong base. These bases have very weak conjugate acids. Such bases are formed by mixing an alkali metal with its conjugate acid. A superbase cannot remain in aqueous solution because it is a stronger base than the hydroxide ion. An example of a superbase in sodium hydride (NaH). The strongest superbase is the orthos include silicon dioxide (SiO2) and NaOH mounted on alumina. Solid bases may be used in anion exchange resins or for reactions with gaseous acids. Reaction Between an Acid and a Base An acid and a base react with each other in a neutralization reaction. In neutralization, an aqueous acid and aqueous base produce an aqueous solution of salt and water. If the salt is saturated or insoluble, then it may precipitate out of the solution. While it may seem like acids and bases are opposites, some species can act as either an acid or a base. In fact, some strong acids can act as bases. Sources Jensen, William B. (2006).
